Bethesda Basketball Champions

Congrats to Coach Joe Kaufman and the Wood Acres Tigers, several of whom train in our program, for going a perfect 4-0 and winning the Charm City Tournament Series Next Level Tournament to become the Mid-Atlantic Champions!

Early Adversity

This was no immediate climb to success. Rather, the Tigers made a steady, consistent climb through consistent and dedicated work. They spent months practicing as a team and attending Ness Basketball Skill sessions. The Tigers have also battled across the DMV against other top-level AAU teams in tournaments and league play. On the league side, the Tigers advance through the playoffs of the 365 HBL Fall League and made it all the way to the championship game in the Gold Division which is the division for the top teams.

The Tigers were tied at half time against an amazing opponent, but ultimately the Tigers lost that game. But they lost as a team and they did not hang their heads. They immediately got back to work and jumped into the tournament circuit where they won multiple games but also faced some elite competition and again learned from losses.

Improving as Friends

All of this grinding is not really a "grind" with the Tigers. This is a close knit group of friends, most of whom go to the same school, so they win, and lose, together. The family-run nature of the team means they are all in together.

But here's the scary thing, when you take that level of enjoyment, and combine it with work ethic and skill development, you get a championship-caliber team. And sure enough, the Tigers displayed their growth and emerged victorious as the Mid-Atlantic Champions! The Championship game was an epic back and forth game with multiple lead changes. The difference was passing and team defense, the two areas that the Tigers are particularly known for. It's all because of that friendship-first bond. In the end, the Tigers won a 2-point game (defeating an opponent that had previously beaten the Tigers at a prior tournament).

Congrats again to this amazing group!
